Self-Diagnosing Knee Injuries

0

Being injured when you’re away from home can be frightening, especially when home is halfway around the world. Instead of panicking, you need to carefully assess how badly you’re injured to determine if you need to go to a hospital or find a doctor the next day. If you’ve fallen and hurt your knee, the pain can be excruciating, but the injury may not call for immediate treatment.

Diagnosing Knee Pain

One of the most significant symptoms you will have when you’ve injured your knee is pain, and it can help you decide if the injury requires emergency care or if you can wait to visit a doctor’s office. In order to determine which doctor or place to see about the pain you’re having, you need to consider two things – how the pain started and where the pain is located.

How the Pain Started

If the soreness started due to an injury – such as falling down or twisting your knee – then you may need to seek emergency care if you are having trouble putting weight on it, it is swollen, and/or you’re experiencing a tremendous amount of pain. However, if the discomfort is less intense and it has been ongoing for a while, then you should be able to wait to see a doctor to have your knee examined.

Location of Knee Pain

When you determine how to get knee pain treatment in Singapore, identifying the location of the pain can help doctors diagnose what is wrong with your knee. One of the most common places to have knee pain is at the front of the knee around the kneecap or patella. Usually, the pain is due to overuse of the knee. Even if you live a fairly sedentary life, you can still get knee pain.

Each side of the knee can be affected in some manner due to the joint’s structure, so it is important to be able to pinpoint where the pain is located. This will help the doctor to determine if the cartilage or ligaments of the knee have been affected, which could call for surgery if the damage is severe. However, if you are older, then the pain may be the result of arthritis, which means you can wait to see your regular doctor for treatment when you return home.

Self-Treatment for Pain

If you have pain in your knee, but you don’t want to visit the hospital, you can do some things to reduce the pain and any swelling that you may have. Sit or lay down so there is no weight on the knee and use a pillow to elevate it. If there is swelling, place an icepack wrapped in a towel over the area to reduce the swelling.

You can take an over-the-counter pain medicine if you need it to help with the pain. While you’re resting your knee, try to determine where it hurts so you can explain it to the doctor when you see him or her. The doctor should be able to treat your knee so you can travel home.
